Bio
Greensboro native Harry Hassell received his BA in Music from Emory University and his MM in Saxophone performance from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. His 35-year career as a multiple-woodwind specialist encompasses performing in theme parks, cruise ships, theatrical tours, symphony orchestras, rock and roll bands, and a 20-year career as a musician in New York City where he performed in the pit orchestras of close to fifty Broadway shows.
Harry grew up singing in church choirs and performing in local community theaters and believes strongly that music should be a part of every child’s development. Practicing a musical instrument rewards the student who is willing to put in the time, and success as a musician builds confidence in every aspect of a student’s life. It has been shown time and time again that students who learn music in their adolescence develop analytical thinking patterns that they can then apply to whatever occupation they choose. Harry’s process-oriented approach stresses creative thinking and teaching the student to listen and evaluate their own performance: in essence, becoming their own teacher.
While Harry is justly proud of his students who have gone on to become successful professional musicians and teachers, his goal is to nurture curious minds and give to his students a love for music that will last their entire lives whatever they choose to do later in life.
